Russia’s final medal tally includes 23 golds, 21 silvers and 28 bronze, giving a total of 72 medals to finish in third place in the table.

Day 16: Overall positive outcome

August 24 brought Russia two golds and one bronze.

Russia’s final gold medal of the Beijing Olympics was won around noon Moscow time in the lightweight (60 kg) category boxing.

In a hard-fought final bout Alexei Tishchenko beat France’s Daouda Sow. 11-9.

The victory follows his gold in the featherweight category at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Earlier Russia’s rhythmic gymnastics team won its third straight gold, overcoming the formidable home side, which had to settle for silver.

Russia’s men’s volleyball team beat Italy 94-81 in the bronze-medal play-off.

Day 15: Third place secured

August 23 brought Russia four golds, three silvers and four bronze.

Boxer Rakhim Chakhkiev claimed Saturday Russia’s 21st gold of the Beijing Olympics.

The 25-year-old defeated 2007 world champion Clemente Russo from Italy 4-2 in the heavyweight final.

Evgeniya Kanayeva won gold in the rhythmic gymnastics individual all-round final. She scored a total of 75.500 points after receiving perfect marks for four of the apparatus. Silver was claimed by Inna Zhukova from Belarus with 71.925 points, followed by Ukraine’s Anna Bessonova with 71.875 points.

The 18-year-old had the top score on all four apparatus (75.500) to give Russia their third consecutive Olympic Games title in the individual all-round. Kanayeva, the 2008 European individual all-round champion, led the field by 0.650 points after the first piece of apparatus and extended her lead as the four rotations progressed.

An outstanding performance by Russia’s synchronised swimmers took Russia into third place on the Olympic medal standings. The eight-member synchronised swimming team scored perfect tens in the free routine programme to win a gold medal with a staggering total of 99.500 points.

Maksim Opalev secured a gold medal in the men’s 500 metre canoe singles. It is the first Olympic gold of his career, which includes two previous Olympic outings.

Irina Kalentyeva won bronze in the Women’s Cross Country Mountain Bike race. Over five laps on a gruelling 4.5-km course, the German rider Sabine Spitz won gold in 1:45:11, fully 41 seconds ahead of Poland’s Maja Wloszczowska. Kalentyeva finished in 1:46:28.

The Russian has team claimed the silver in the women’s 4×400-metre relay and followed that up with bronze in the men’s event.

In the pool, Gleb Galperin won bronze in the men’s 10-metre platform scoring 525.80 points.

Russia’s women’s basketball team beat China 94-81 in the bronze-medal playoff.

Anna Chicherova won another bronze, equalling her personal best of 2.03 metres in the women’s high jump.

Sergey Ulegin and Aleksandr Kostoglod took silver behind China in the final of the Men’s Flatwater Canoe Pairs 500m.

And Russia’s women’s handball team won silver after rivals Norway claimed the Olympic final in Beijing.

Day 14: Relay sensation

August 22 brought Russia one gold, one silver and three bronze.

Russian athletes were first in women’s 4x100m relay. Yevgeniya Polyakova, Aleksandra, Fedoriva, Yulia Gushchina and Yulia Chermoshanskaya won Russia’s 17th gold at the Beijing Olympics.

Hot favourites Jamaica dropped the baton.

Early on Friday walker Denis Nizhegorodov claimed another bronze for Russia. He came third in the men’s 50km marathon not far behind Italian Alex Schwarzer and Australian Jared Tallent. Four years ago in Athens Nizhegorodov won silver in the same discipline.

Georgy Balakshin has also secured bronze in the men’s flyweight boxing competition (48-51kg). He lost 8-9 in the semi-final to Cuba’s Andris Laffita Hernandez in a tight struggle.

Athlete Tatyana Chernova has been promoted to bronze in the women’s heptathlon (August 16) after Ukraine’s Lyudmila Blonska was disqualified for use of prohibited drugs.

Tatyana Lebedeva has won silver in the women’s long jump final with a jump of 7.03 metres. The former Olympic champion lost to Brazil’s Maurren Higa Maggi who jumped 7.04 meters.

Day 13: Closing on third place?

August 21 brought Russia three golds, two silvers and one bronze.

Olga Kaniskina won gold in the women’s 20km race walk, finishing ahead of Kjersti Tysse Platzer of Norway (silver) and Elisa Rigaudo of Italy (bronze).

Russia’s second gold medalist of the day was Shirvani Muradov, who grabbed gold in the men’s freestyle wrestling in the 96kg category, defeating Germany’s Davyd Bichinashvili.

Heavyweight Bakhtiar Akhmedov was second in the men’s freestyle wrestling, while Georgy Ketoev claimed bronze in the 84kg category.

Modern pentathlon star Andrey Moiseev claimed Russia’s third gold of the day. He finished a 10-hour competition leaving two Lithuanians to claim 2nd and 3rd, around 100 points behind. Moiseev was defending his Olympic title, which he claimed in Athens four years ago.

Also on Thursday, 22-year-old Maria Abakumova grabbed silver in the women’s Javelin. Abakumova was leading the pack after five attempts with 70.78 metres, which was a new European record.

But Czech Barbara Spotakova out-threw Russia’s wunderkind, sending the javelin an amazing 71.32 metres.

Day 12: Swimmers rule!

August 20 brought Russia three golds.

Eight-time world champion Larisa Ilchenko took gold in the inaugural 10 km open water marathon swim.

The two Anastasias, Davydova and Yermakova, won the synchronised swimming pairs event receiving a set of perfect 10s for technical merit.

Buvaysar Saytiev, 33, matched the all-time Olympic wrestling record with his third freestyle wrestling gold in the 74 kg category.

Day 11: Wrestlers reap rewards

August 19 brought Russia two golds, silver and three bronze.

Mavlet Batirov won the men’s freestyle wrestling in the 60 kg category.

In the 55 kg freestyle wrestling Russia’s Besik Kudukhov shared the bronze with Radoslav Velikov of Bulgaria.

Andrey Silnov grabbed gold in the men’s high jump.

Another Russian high jumper, Yaroslav Rybakov, joined Silnov on the podium with a bronze medal.

Evgeny Chigishev won a silver medal in the men’s 105kg weightlifting competition.

On the cycling track, Mikhail Ignatiev and Aleksey Markov won bronze in the men’s madison.

Day 10: Pole vaulter hits the heights

August 18 brought Russia gold, silver and three bronze.

Pole vaulter Elena Isinbaeva took gold and set the world record by soaring to 5.05 metres, while Svetlana Feofanova took bronze with a best jump of 4.75 metres.

Dmitry Klokov and Dmitry Lapikov won silver and bronze medals respectively in the men’s 105 kg weightlifting event.

Gymnast Anton Golotsutskov scored 16.475 in the men’s vault to take his second bronze of the Games.

Day 9: Tennis women’s grand slam

August 17 brought Russia two golds, four silvers and four bronze.

Elena Dementieva beat compatriot Dinara Safina to claim Olympic gold in the tennis final.

Vera Zvonareva won bronze and ensured that Russia took all three medals.

Gulnara Galkina-Samitova won the women’s 3000m steeplechase, setting a new world record with a time of 8:58.81.

Another Russian athlete, world champion Ekaterina Volkova took bronze in 9:07.64.

Tatyana Lebedeva won silver in the women’s triple jump. She achieved 15.32, just 7cm less than the winner Francoise Mbango Eton of Cameroon.

Julia Pakhalina took her second Beijing Olympics silver in women’s 3m springboard diving.

Alena Kartashova won silver in women’s 63kg freestyle wrestling.

Khadzhimurat Akkaev took bronze in the men’s 94kg weightlifting competition, lifting a total weight of 402 kg.

Anton Golotsutskov won bronze in the artistic gymnastics floor exercise.

Day 8: Russians put rivals to the sword!

August 16 brought Russia two golds.

Valery Borchin claimed gold in the 20km race walk.

Viktoria Nikishina, Aida Shanaeva, Svetlana Boyko and Evgenia Lamonova bagged the fencing women’s foil team gold, crushing the U.S. team 28-11.

Day 7: Bronze Bonanza

August 15 brought Russia five bronze.

Arkady Vyatchanin scooped his second Beijing Olympics medal in the men’s 200m back swimming.

Nadezhda Evstyukhina came third in the 75kg weightlifting event.

Archer Bair Badenov claimed bronze in the men’s individual archery.

Mikhail Kuznetsov and Dmitry Larionov took another bronze in the men’s double canoe slalom.

Vladimir Isakov was promoted to bronze in the men’s 15-metre free pistol (August 12) as North Korea’s Kim Jong Su was stripped of his silver after disqualification for failing a dope test.

Day 6: Greco-Roman sweep

August 14 brought Russia one gold and one silver.

European champion Aslanbek Khushtov won gold in the Greco-Roman wrestling in the 96 kg category, beating Germany’s Mirko Englich.

Khasan Baroev claimed silver in the 120 kg category.

Day 5: Silver crop

August 13 brought Russia three silvers.

The veteran Dmitry Sautin and his young partner, Yury Kunakov, claimed silver in the synchronised diving 3m springboard event. It’s Sautin’s eighth Olympic medal.

Nikita Lobintsev, Danila Izotov, Aleksey Sukhorukov and Evgeny Lagunov picked up silver in the men’s 4 x 200m freestyle relay swimming final.

Oksana Slivenko gained silver in the women’s 69 kg weightlifting competition, lifting a total weight of 255 kg.

Day 4: At last! Russia’s first gold

August 12 brought Russia two golds and one bronze.

Nazir Mankiev won gold in the Greco-Roman wrestling in the 55 kg category, beating Azerbaijan’s Rovshan Bairamov.

Islambek Albiev claimed gold in the 60 kg category, becoming the youngest-ever Olympic champion in the Greco-Roman wrestling.

In the swimming pool Arkady Vyatchanin picked up bronze in the men’s 100m backstroke.

Day 3: Three medals – still no gold

August 11 brought Russia one silver and one bronze.

Marina Shainova won silver in the women’s 58 kg weightlifting event, lifting a total weight of 227 kg.

Gleb Galperin and Dmitry Dobroskok claimed bronze in the synchronised diving 10m platform competition.

Day 2: Sharpshooters claim more medals

August 10 brought Russia two silvers and one bronze.

August 9 brought Russia one silver.
